But Seriously . . .

I have composed quite a bit of serious, modern classical music over the years.  One piece that may the most accessible is Lancaster County, a Suite of Hymns for String Orchestra.  I’ve decided to release it for general distribution and it is now available in all stores and streaming platforms.

The work runs approximately 17 minutes. It is dedicated to the Amish-Mennonite communities concentrated in Lancaster County as well as other locations in the United States. I have attempted to portray via instrumental music the emotional values of life within this unique community—the nobility of their work ethic, their devotion to their beliefs and their resolve in preserving tradition and practice. The irony of this work is that the Amish are discouraged from listening to instrumental music. Although they often sing while performing their daily routine and worship, much of their singing is derived from a 16th century Anabaptist hymnal, the Ausbund. These ancient hymns do not deliver much emotional impact to modern listeners outside the Amish community. The five hymns I have composed are appropriately simple, somewhat rough-hewn. It is in their development that the values described above are fully portrayed.
